MENTOR & INSPIRATION >

Throughout history, inspirational mentors who have overcome the seemingly impossible have risen to inspire and motivate others. One such visionary, whose advice has become indispensable in my own life, is that of the late Jim Rohn.

He is best known as an acclaimed businessman and entrepreneur who became a millionaire under the mentorship of Earl Shoaff and then set about his new life goal of teaching others to achieve financial wealth.
Jim Rohn has left behind a legacy that will linger on for a very long time, especially for those interested in building wealth beyond their wildest dreams.

We selected Jim Rohn as one of our FDN Life Mentors of the Year and will share with you the lessons we have learned and applied from his teaching over the past five years.

In this issue, we study and explore the power of changing our philosophy.

Let’s get right to it:

“Change your philosophy, change your future.” – JIM ROHN

LESSON 1

“How do you feel about the past? Treat the past as a school. Don’t use the past as a burden to carry, and don’t use the past as a club to beat yourself up.” – JIM ROHN

REQUIREMENTS:
• Notebook
• Pen/Pencil
• YouTube Video

TAKE NOTES:
When we write down what we have learned, the act helps us remember, break down, and internalize information. To benefit the most from this lesson, listen to the seminar video provided and take notes as you follow along. Stop the recording whenever necessary.

LESSON 1 – KEY TAKE-AWAYS

• TIME IS MORE VALUABLE THAN MONEY
Jim says, “Time is more valuable than money. You can get more money, but you can’t get more time.”

Lesson Learned:
Don’t waste your time on the people and things that are not important enough. While we can all earn more money, we can’t create more time. It is a non-renewable resource. Instead, spend time on valuable aspects that bring you closer to your goals and dreams.

If we continue to waste our time, our life will soon waste away before us, and we will look back in old age and wonder what the heck happened.

• THINGS HAPPEN JUST
“Things don’t just happen, things happen just.”

Lesson Learned: People often blame everything from the government to their family life and their upbringing for whatever is going wrong in their life. But at the end of the day, these are all excuses and forms of procrastination. In essence, things happen just, as Jim Rohn says, since we always get back whatever we put in (the cause and effect principle).

Example: If we don’t put in the extra hours to achieve our financial dreams, we can’t expect to earn more. If we don’t learn to improve our personal perspective and adopt new strategies to improve our life, we can’t expect our life to be any different from yesterday.

“It’s not what you get that makes you valuable, it’s what you become. ” – JIM ROHN

• BE WILLING TO LEARN FROM SOMEONE ELSE
Have an open mind and be willing to learn, even if what you have to learn challenges you and pushes you out of your comfort zone.

Lesson Learned: Our ego is one of the biggest detriments to achieving better results in our life. To learn and change, we need to be willing to open our minds to learning new things or taking advice from someone who has already achieved what we want to achieve. It’s not always easy, but if we are willing to listen, we might learn something we’ve never thought of before.

“Ideas can be life changing. ” – JIM ROHN

• FIND A MENTOR
Select a mentor who has already achieved what you want to achieve in life.

Lesson Learned: Jim says most people stay poor because they take advice from poor people. If you want to improve anything in your life, whether it is to be fitter, financially successful or have more meaningful relationships, search for someone (a mentor or inspirational person) who is already where you want to be. Taking advice from a person who lacks the experience or practical knowledge we need to achieve our goals is like being a sheep who follows all the other sheep down a ditch. Select your mentor wisely.

• SINCERITY
Jim says, “The best place for people to start communicating is with sincerity on both sides.”

Lesson Learned: To benefit the most from the lessons from your mentor, you will need to be sincere of heart.

• BUT SINCERITY IS NOT A TEST OF TRUTH
Jim says, “Don’t make the mistake of assuming that he/she must be right because he is so sincere. Why? Because it’s possible to be sincerely wrong.”

• “IDEAS CAN BE LIFE-CHANGING”
Jim says, “Sometimes, all you need is just one more idea in a series of good ideas.”

Lesson Learned: One good idea has the power to change your life. You might have come up with a thousand ideas over the years, none of which has worked so far. But you might find an inspiring idea in the most unusual place, and that new idea might be the idea that changes your life forever. In essence, keep searching until you find that goose that lays the golden eggs.

“If the future gets clear, the price gets easy.” – JIM ROHN

• FOCUS ON THE BELIEVERS
Jim says, “You will always have a variety of reactions to the same thing. Some will believe, but others won’t. At the end of the day, I believe the preacher was focused on the believers.”

Lesson Learned: In business, focus on those interested in your product or service. Not everyone will support or follow you. It is just how it is in life. “Some will buy, others won’t.” Instead of focusing on the multitude, rather focus on those interested or who are sincere about your product or services.

• FIND YOUR INSPIRATION
Jim says, “Who knows the mystery of inspiration? Why some people are inspired, and some are not. Why were some inspired to attend a seminar, while others weren’t? How come you made it and others didn’t? Who can understand the mystery of that? I have learned to accept these mysteries and call these ‘mysteries of the mind.’ These days, I take the simple approach. Who knows?”

Lesson Learned: It causes a lot of heartache to try to analyze and figure out everything. If you spend all your time trying to analyze why some clients buy and some don’t, or why one video is receiving better reviews than others, you might get lost in all the data. Take a simpler approach: some buy and some don’t. Focus on those who buy.

• BE THANKFUL FOR WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE
Jim says, “The best way to start your day is to be thankful for what you already have.”

Lesson Learned: Sometimes, we focus so much on what we want and don’t have, that we forget about what we already have. When we focus on being thankful, we change the feeling inside ourselves to a more positive one. When we feel good, we also perform better.

LESSON 2 – KEY TAKE-AWAYS

1. CYNICISM
Jim says, “Here’s what locks up the doors and the channels to receiving more – cynicism. That locks you away. That prevents you from learning more. Being a cynic about the past and the future. Cynical about the marketplace, the people, and the government. Cynical about yourself and your chances.”

Lesson Learned: Most of the time our minds determine our outcome. If we are cynical about everything and believe our business will fail even before we start, lo and behold, it will fail. The mind plays a pivotal part in success. Ensure that whatever you put into your mind and whatever comes out as thoughts, are inline with what you want to achieve.

2. NOT LISTENING WITH FOCUS
Jim says, “Life still goes on while you are listening to this seminar. But it is important to pull your attention from what is going on out there and listen well.”

Lesson Learned: Learning to FOCUS is one of the most valuable skillsets you will ever learn.

“Here’s what locks up the doors and the channels to receiving more – cynicism.” – JIM ROHN

3. NOT TAKING NOTES

Jim says, “Take good notes. I have not come to entertain you.”

Lesson Learned: If you want to become successful at anything, you will need to become serious about it. Mentors are not entertainers but share their knowledge and expertise so that others may learn from their success and achieve success themselves. By taking notes, we commit what we learn to memory much more easily than we do by just listening. Get yourself a notebook dedicated to your personal development and take notes whenever you listen to any online mentorship video or audio or read a book.

4. A FOLLOWER – BUT NOT A STUDENT
Jim says, “We didn’t come here seeking disciples. We have no movement for you to join. I’m just here to share my experiences, good ideas, as best I can. But don’t be a follower, be a student. Take advice but not orders. Take information but don’t let someone else order your life. Ensure you come to your own conclusions and your actions are derived from your own conclusions.”

Lesson Learned: It is important that we learn to think for ourselves and stand on our own feet.
