Series: Jim Rohn – FDN Life Mentor of the Year

In our previous mentor series articles featured in FDN Life Magazine, we introduced you to our FDN Mentor of the Year, the late Jim Rohn. Probably one of the most inspirational life and wealth mentors of our time. We covered lessons 1 – 7, and learned about the 5 major pieces to the life puzzle. In the upcoming issues during 2020, we will cover Lessons 8 – 11.

During today’s lesson, we will learn more about:

  • Getting results by following Mr. Rohn’s ‘Proven Principles.’
  • Improving your skills so that you can earn more by becoming more.
  • Investing in yourself more often.
  • Dealing with wishful thinking.

Let’s get right to it:

LESSON 8

RESULTS – THE PROVEN PRINCIPLES

#1 – PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

SHEOFF’S SECRETS TO SUCCESS

SECRET I – GET RID OF YOUR ‘BLAME LIST’

Mr. Jim Rohn says, “I struggled with personal development back in the day. It was hard for me to let go of my ‘blame list.’ It was so comfortable blaming the government, negative relatives, the company and company policy, crisis and circumstances and all. But Mr. Sheoff said: ‘It’s not what happens that determines the major part of your future. What happens-happens to us all. They key is what you DO about it.”

Lesson Learned: It is often easier for us (and more comfortable) to blame exterior and interior circumstances for our current circumstances. Its easier to say we are to fat or to thin that’s why we can’t do x and y. Its easier to say we had a bad childhood that’s why we can’t be successful or prosperous. Its easier to say the government, taxes and company policy is the problem, that is why we are not earning more. Though these can at times in history be definite exterior problems, we as humans also have a tendency to use these as excuses. Most often, we procrastinate and put of what we know we should do to achieve our dreams and ideals. Whether it is fear holding us back, or plain laziness, if you don’t change the way you think and feel about the only building blocks that you have in life, then you will continue to stay poor in mind, body, soul and wealth. The key to changing your life is to take action and do something about your situation. Collectively as the human species, we have the change right now to change the exterior if we don’t like it. We can stand up against tyranny or unwanted government invasion on privacy. We can say enough is enough, no more censorship. The key is though to take action, not continue to procrastinate or wait for better days that usually never comes.

SECRET II – YOU ATTRACT WHAT YOU HAVE BECAUSE OF WHO ARE AS A PERSON

Mr. Jim Rohn says, “What you have at the moment is what you have attracted to you by the person you have become.”

Lesson Learned: It’s often easier NOT to take responsibility for your own life. Its easier to blame-shift, or sit back and wait for ‘better days.’ Those better days never arise as we all know. It’s important to know that you attract to you the things that you often think about the most. We are all energy forms, and every day we put out energy into the world.

Our thoughts are one of the most powerful forms of energy. That is why we often become or get what we think about the most. It’s not instantaneous of course, it takes time. But if you combine thoughts with emotion, it will accelerate and bring that into your life even faster. That is why it is so important to work on your own personal thought process first if you want to be successful. That is where personal development comes in. You have to look within yourself and ask the question, ‘is my thought processes in error?’ Am I attracting poverty to me because of my personal poor mindset?’

We have in our life what we have attracted to us, and we have the power to attract what we want by improving who we are and becoming the person we desire to be.

SECRET III – TO HAVE MORE YOU HAVE TO BECOME MORE

Mr. Jim Rohn says, “You’ve attracted to you the things you have because of the person you’ve become. But if you will change, everything will change for you. To have more, you have to become more.”

Lesson Learned: Whether we are yearning for a better life with more wealth or a happier life, none of these are available unless we are willing to become more so we can have what we desire. You don’t find happiness after all, you create happiness. It’s within us all. The question is: “Are you ready to take responsibility for your own life and become more?”

SECRET IV – SUCCESS IS AN INTERNAL NOT EXTERNAL PROCESS

Mr. Jim Rohn says, “You don’t change what’s outside, you change from the inside.”

Lesson Learned: Change starts with you, no one else. It is your responsibility to own your successes and mistakes. It is up to each of us to take action and make things happen in our own life. To wait for ‘someone’ to take care of you – the prince / princess on the white horse – is wishful thinking. It is not anther persons responsibility to make you happy, bring meaning or create excitement in your life. It is your responsibility to gain maturity and understand that you might not always have control over external forces, but you have control of the internal forces within you. You are a powerful human being. Make it count!

SECRET V – DON’T WISH IT WAS EASIER, WISH YOU WERE BETTER

Mr. Jim Rohn says, “Don’t wish it was easier, wish you were better. Don’t wish for less problems, wish for more skills. Start working on yourself. Making these personal changes, and everything will change for you.”

Lesson Learned: Wishful thinking is for Aladdin and his lamp. In real life, taking the easiest road isn’t all that fulfilling nor gratifying. When you are old and looking back at your life, will you look back with regrets that you didn’t do what your heart yearned for? Or, will you take charge of your life today and find a way to become better and more skilled?

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT – MONEY MATTERS

PRINCIPLE 1 – MONEY IS A MEASURABLE UNIT OF ACCOUNTABILITY

Mr. Jim Rohn says, “Money is not the only place to start. Money is not the only value, but we’ve all got to start somewhere, and money is something you can count. Kids are interested in money. Lot’s of things are tough to measure, but economics are easy. We can count money and see how we are doing.”

Lesson Learned: You might not like it, but most of the world today understand numbers. The evaluation score you achieve during a loan application determines the interest rate or amount you can get. Your current salary determines your lifestyle, and what type of medical aid you can afford. Your current income determines the type of fitness and health goals you can pursue, and the type of aftercare you can expect during retirement. As Mr Pena (The $1 Trillion Dollar Man) so famously said during an interview with Brian Rose: “Zen doesn’t pay the bills.”

Yes, Zen is also an important component of life. But it is not the only element that we need to live a life of meaning and prosperity on Earth. Life is made up of a combination of elements who all play their part. Money is just one component of the many. If you are ignorant and choose to ignore the importance of money, life will become a hard game to play.

PRINCIPLE 2 – VALUE = MONEY

Mr. Jim Rohn says, “We get paid for bringing value to the marketplace (reality).”

Lesson Learned: Why is it that a virtual assistant (VA) earns on average between $5 – $15 per hour, while an executive assistant can earn anything between $20 – $110 plus per hour?

We as humans have attached a different value proposition to stuff and services. To us, a VA is less valuable compared to an executive assistant. The same goes for most other professions. A general practitioner earns less than a surgeon. Most website designers often earn less than software engineers. The key is the value that we attach to a product and service in accordance to what we believe its value is in the marketplace, followed by the buyers understanding of the person they are hiring’s value.

Can we earn more though?

Is it possible to position yourself as someone of value and get paid more?

PRINCIPLE 3 – YOU CAN BECOME IMMEASURABLY VALUABLE IN THE SAME TIME FRAME

Mr. Jim Rohn says, “It takes time to bring value to the marketplace. But we don’t get paid for time. We get paid for VALUE. It’s important to understand this. Mistakenly the man says he is making $20 an hour. Not true! If that was true you could just stay home and ask them to send you the money. You don’t get paid for the hour; you get paid for the value you brought in the hour. Is it possible to become twice as valuable in the same timeframe thought? Is it possible to become thrice as valuable? A hundred times more valuable in one hour.”

Lesson Learned: Working more hours won’t make your richer. The only way to get wealthier is to become a person of more value. You earn according to the value you bring to the marketplace not how many hours you can work at a mediocre hourly rate. It is the mindset of a poor donkey to try and earn more for the same hourly rate for years on end. If you want to become wealthier, you need to bring more value to the world.

PRINCIPLE 4 – IF YOU ARE NOT VALUABLE TO THE MARKETPLACE (REALITY) YOU DON’T GET MUCH MONEY

Mr. Jim Rohn says, “Now, don’t get this the wrong way. You may be a valuable person to your family, society, church, and so on. But if you don’t bring much value to the marketplace, you don’t get much money. Those are called, ‘THE FACTS.”

PRINCIPLE 5 – YOU CAN’T GET RICH BY DEMAND

Mr. Jim Rohn says, “Some say they will strike for more money. But there is a major problem with that. You can’t get rich by demand. Rather become more valuable.”

Lesson Learned: Has demanding a pay raise or higher wages ever solved your problem of not having enough money? We all know it rarely does. Why? Inflation, price hikes, increased taxes, and all other contributing external factors eventually nullify the short-term relieve a pay raise might bring. Demanding a pay raise is a short-term solution. The key is to play the long-term game. Find a long-term solution to earning more money in the same amount of time. You can do that by becoming of higher value in the market that you focus on.

PRINCIPLE 6 – THE SECRET TO BECOMING MORE VALUABLE

Mr. Jim Rohn says, “Mr. Sheoff said to me: ‘Here is a secret. Learn to work harder on yourself than you do on your job.’ Once I got that, it turned my life around. Mr. Sheoff continued to say: ‘If you work hard on your job, you will make a living. If you work hard on yourself, you can make a fortune.’”

Lesson Learned: You will dynamically increase your income if you work more on yourself than on your job. Develop the skills to become more valuable.

PRINCIPLE 7 – FOCUS ON INTERIOR VALUE IMPROVEMENT FIRST NOT EXTERIOR

Mr. Jim Rohn says, “Get to work on the right things. Don’t focus on trying to change those things ‘out there.’ You can’t change much what is going on out in the exterior. The building blocks you were given, such as the rain, soil, and seed are what you’ve been given. You can’t change the rain or seed or soil. Let these rather work for you. Start working on the inside first. Start working on your philosophy, attitude and your personality. Work on your language. Your gift of communication. Work on all of your abilities. And if you start making those personal changes, I’m telling you, everything will change for you.”

Lesson Learned: Unless freedom, human rights and liberty is at stake, trying to forces exterior influences to change is a hard job. There is not much we can do to change the way the seasons work, or to try and force the seed to grow without giving it the proper water and soil it needs. Work on your own abilities, skill development and learning how to handle your internal landscape such as emotions. Improve your communication skills.

PRINCIPLE 8 – LEARN THESE TWO KEY PRINCIPLES

Mr. Jim Rohn says, “There are two key phrases to learn. 1) Life and business is like the seasons, and, 2) You cannot change the seasons but you can change yourself.”

Lesson Learned: Hope might be a nice concept, but it doesn’t mean much without taking action. To sit around and wait and hope for better days, or hoping for things to change in your life, will not achieve much. Except that you might wake up one day and realized that you aged 10-years without doing much with your life.

We bring about change in our life by becoming a better, more valuable person to society, the marketplace and within ourselves. Hoping that outside conditions will change by themselves is wishful thinking, since change of the ‘seasons’ are very slow. It’s better to use the seasons to your advantage. Life will change for you when you change.

In today’s lesson we learned about Mr. Sheoff’s 5-secrets to success, as well as 8-principles to personal development in order to become more valuable to the marketplace so that we can achieve our biggest dream and highest ideals.
