Creating a packing list for long-term travel can feel daunting, but for a Digital Nomad it has become a necessary task.

For a first time long-term traveler, knowing what to pack can be confusing, and it is easy to overlook or forget important items.

To assist with this we have put together some tips for when preparing to pack, and a list of the most important items to remember.

Top Tips When Packing For Long-Term Travel

Pack Items That Are Multi-Function & Multi-Purpose

Example: instead of packing a travel adapter for each country, rather pack one multipoint travel adapter that can work in most situations in most countries.

Travel Packing Phase 01

Divide the room you are packing in-in two halves. Then spread out everything that you might need for your travels on your bed and room in one section. Call this section your PACKING SECTION. Even though some items might seem trivial, still lay them out so you can see everything.

 Travel Packing Phase 02

Once you have added all the possible items to your PACKING SECTION, start sorting out the most essential items that you really can’t do without when travelling, to the 2nd half of the room, and call this side of the room your OFFICIAL TRAVEL ITEMS SECTION. Whatever you add to the 2nd half of your room, you will pack and take with you.

 Travel Packing Phase 03

Continue adding and subtracting items from the two sections until you have the minimum possible items in your OFFICIAL TRAVEL ITEMS SECTION. Keep these items visible and, over the next few days, consider and reconsider each item before officially packing it in your bag.

The above methodology will help you eliminate redundant items, and consider how to best use each item.

When packing, only take one of each thing, and try to take items that are multi-function.

Example: One pencil and one pen are enough. You don’t need to take multiple stationary items, only take what you really need for your specific industry.

Another example is that you don’t need a calculator since you have one on your phone and laptop.

There are many other scenarios.

Pick up each item and ask yourself if there is another item that you are already taking that is already doing the job of this.

Clothing is most often the most expensive item to purchase in another country. If you are only traveling in summer and spring locations, you might get by with minimal clothing. But still always take a jacket, as you never know. It’s also cold on planes and trains, even though it’s summer.

When traveling a combination of summer, spring, and winter locations, you’ll need much more clothing. Consider each item and if it can be used in multiple ways.

Some of The Most Important Items To Consider For Your Digital Nomad Packing List

  • Laptop and chargers: Since you’re a digital nomad, your laptop and its charger are your bread and butter. Don’t forget to pack them, and make sure you have a backup charger.

  • Travel adapter: Depending on your destination, you may need a travel adapter to plug in your electronics. Make sure you have one that is compatible with the country you’re traveling to.

  • Portable Wi-Fi hotspot: A reliable internet connection is crucial for remote work. Consider getting a portable Wi-Fi hotspot to ensure you can always stay connected.

  • Smartphone and charger: In addition to your laptop, your smartphone is also an essential tool for staying connected and navigating your surroundings.

  • Power bank: Since you’ll be relying on your electronics throughout the day, it’s a good idea to add a power bank to your packing list, to keep them charged when you’re on the go.

  • Noise-canceling headphones or earplugs: Sometimes, you need to block out the noise around you to focus on your work. Noise-canceling headphones are a must-have on any digital nomad’s packing list.

  • SSD or external hard drive: The internet connection is not always reliable in some countries, therefore it is a good idea to have a physical back-up instead of relying solely on the cloud.

  •  USB transfer cable: Add it to your packing list in case you need to transfer files from one device to another.

  • Waterproof electronic organizer: To keep your electronics organized and safe.

  • Notebook or planner: It is a great way to keep  track of important information, such as hotel addresses or contact information, without relying on a device that might run out of battery.

  • Lightweight clothing: Since you’ll be on the move, it’s important to pack lightweight and versatile clothing that can easily be mixed and matched.

  • Travel-sized toiletries: To save space, consider packing travel-sized toiletries like toothpaste, shampoo, and bodywash.

  • Travel towel: A lightweight and quick-drying travel towel is an excellent addition to your packing list.

  • Packing cubes: To keep your bag organized and save space, packing cubes can be a lifesaver.

  • Universal sink stopper: If you plan on doing laundry in the sink, a universal sink stopper will come in handy.

  • Purifying Water bottle: Stay hydrated while on the go with a reusable water bottle. Get a purifying water bottle as some countries do not have water that is safe to drink as is.

  • First aid kit: It’s always a good idea to have a first aid kit, equipped with some essentials such as pain medication, antiseptic cleansers, different sized band-aids, and nausea medication on your packing list.

  • Sunscreen: If you are planning any recreational activities, it is important to pack sunscreen as you might not be accustomed to the UV-exposure, heat, humidity and other natural factors of other countries.

  • Nail care set: Though it might not seem like an essential, you never know what could happen and you may need it. Many travel sized sets are available with only the necessities.

  • Travel umbrella: If you are traveling to a country with unpredictable weather, it is a good idea to put a small, foldable umbrella on your packing list.

  • Sleep mask: Some hotels, hostels or other venues do not have black out curtains or are shared spaces which can impact your sleep schedule. A sleep mask can help in these cases, or on the plane as well.

  • Travel neck pillow: When the travel time is long, or you are faced with an uncomfortable sleeping arrangement, a travel pillow can come in handy to save you some unnecessary neck pain.

  • Flashlight: Some countries have unpredictable power cuts and blackouts, therefore having a small flashlight on your packing list can be useful.

  • E-reader, Kindle or digital reading device: While reading is a great way to pass the time, traveling with clunky books is not a good idea. Therefore pack a digital reading device, as you will have access to more books and it will take up less space.

  • Tracker: It can happen that luggage is misplaced by the airlines, therefore adding some kind of tracker (such as Apple Air Tags) to your packing list for each bag can assist if this happens.

  • Digital copies of important documents: Make sure to keep digital copies of important documents like your passport, ID, and travel insurance in case of an emergency.

  • Travel insurance: Lastly, don’t forget to purchase travel insurance to protect yourself and your belongings while on the road.

A packing list can assist in easing some of the stress that sometimes accompanies long-term travel. And while one Digital Nomad’s packing list may differ from another’s, the lists above may serve as a baseline list for those interested, or already invested, in long-term travel.

 Enjoy a great day!
