So, you just quit your full-time career?
Great job! Welcome to the world of the unemployed

WORK & BUSINESS >

I know it’s scary, this uncertain road of not knowing whether or not you made the right decision. Perhaps you are wondering if your plan to become a freelancer, digital nomad, remote or location independent is going to work out.

Though there is reason for concern, pat yourself on the back for taking the brave step into the unknown and quitting the security of your day job. You now form part of an estimated 162-million-strong global community known as the gig economy – people who either work from home or work-travel around the globe.

5 INSIDER TIPS TO HELP YOU EXCEL IN THE FDN WORLD

5 – GETTING HOLD OF THOSE NERVES

It’s normal to feel fearful about the big step you have just taken. Every FDN who is successful today has been where you are right now. Use the fear and uncertainty to your advantage by facing your feelings head on.

Ask yourself:

  • “What do I fear?”
    • Create a list of your fears by writing them down on a piece of paper.
  • “Why is it that I am feeling fearful of this?”
    • Determine the reason of your fear for each item on your list.
  • “Will what I fear cause me physical harm?”
    • Understand that your fear is only psychological and not physical.

Understand that fear is a part of life and will be a part of most day-to-day operations once you start working as an FDN. As long as your fear is not life-threatening, you have nothing to lose by taking the next brave step to realizing your dreams.

So, take a deep breath. You have everything under control.

4 – CLEAN OUT & START A NEW CHAPTER

Our physical environment has as much impact on us as the emotional and spiritual parts of our life. If you are going to work from home, consider cleaning out your house and setting up a new area for you to work in, or clean out and set up your old office.

If you intend to become a digital nomad, you can put together a list of what you will need to run your remote business daily from wherever you are in the world. Practice setting up your mobile office at home before hitting the road.

It’s very important that we establish a physical work and living environment that is most conducive to our mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing, especially when working full-time from home. A conducive work environment ensures optimal productivity and reward.

3 – USE YOUR REASON FOR QUITTING TO YOUR ADVANTAGE

You quit your job for a reason. Perhaps it was because you have always dreamed about running your own business and being your own boss, or because you desired more quality time at home. Whatever your reason(s), write these down in bold letters in a notebook, diary or organizer where you can see them clearly every so often.

Example:
I quit my job because:
1) I want to be my own boss.
2) I have always dreamed about starting my own business, and now is the right time.
3) I don’t like commuting to work every day.
4) My manager doesn’t afford me the opportunity to grow and expand my knowledge.
5) I felt bored at work. But if I can have more time at home, I will focus on improving my skills.
And so on . . .

When things get tough, the motivating factors you just wrote down will come in handy to remind you exactly why you don’t ever want to go back to your 9-5 job. Use these to keep you motivated and on track.

2 – DEVELOP A DETERMINED MINDSET

Nothing that is worth it in life comes easy. That said, it’s not impossibly difficult either. Most often, our mindset, personal viewpoints, and perspectives are the only factors keeping us from achieving our goals. Know that you will need to adopt an attitude of determination and pro-activeness to achieve your desires.

Ask yourself:

  • “Are my personal viewpoints about life, love, and the world holding me back from achieving my goals and dreams?”
    • Use our Action Kit to work through personal viewpoint questions to get to know yourself better.
  • “What is my perspective on success?”
  • “How do I feel about ___________?”

POWERFUL TOOLS THAT CAN HELP DEVELOP A DETERMINED MINDSET:

  • Deal With Your Fears: Learn to face your fears and work through them when they arise. Don’t bury fears or think you will face them later. They’ll pile up.

  • Positive Affirmations: Create a list of positive affirmations that you repeat every morning before starting work and every evening before going to bed (especially in the first 1 – 12 months of starting out as an FDN). FDN LIFE – ISSUE 2 – ACTION 5

  • Goals: Setting daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, and lifetime goals will help your mind get more organized in terms of what it is you want to achieve in life and why you became an FDN in the first place. Start with lifetime goals, then work your way backward until you have made a list of daily goals for your first day as an official FDN. FDN LIFE – ISSUE 2 – ACTION 6

  • Mentorship: If you don’t have an in-person mentor, find 1 – 5 inspirational YouTube motivational videos by an iconic figure you admire and would most want to be like. Start your day off by listening to the same motivational video for at least a month to gain motivation and inspiration daily. (Especially when you don’t feel up to facing the day, or when facing challenges, find something motivational to pull you out of that frame of mind.) FDN LIFE – ISSUE 2 – ACTION 7

Pro Tip: While cleaning out your house or setting up your office, put on some headphones and listen to a motivational video. Believe me, it makes the cleaning that much more fun.

  • Practical Application: Just as we learn how to ride a bike or drive a car, we learn how to develop a determined mindset that doesn’t give in under stress or pressure. You will need to commit to learning how to deal with stress, fear, and pressure to develop the mindset of a warrior. Come on, you can do it!

1 – DON’T WASTE TIME

You might think now is the perfect time to go on vacation or take time off, or that you will start developing your location independent business “later.” That is one of the biggest mistakes beginner FDNs make. Do not waste time! Use the momentum and burst of freedom and energy you are experiencing right now and start working in your business ASAP. Talk to your first client, get the first project done, and start developing your portfolio/website.

The novelty of quitting your job will wear off pretty soon. It’s important to establish a system for yourself and start setting up your business right away.
